Public Enemy is known as one of the greatest and most controversial groups ever in hip hop. Recently, we thought they split after 30+ years, but it turned out to be a hoax. 30 years aog today, Public released their third album, Fear of a Black Planet. Fear of a Black Planet was the follow-up to It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is viewed by many as one of the greatest hip hop albums ever. Fear of a Black Planet is a dope follow-up and they raised the bar with their first single. Fight the Power was released on the 4th of July in 1989 and it was featured on the Do the Right Thing Soundtrack. Fight the Power is one of the best rap records and they took aim at John Wayne and Elvis Presley.

The single went gold and quickly became the #1 song in the country. Over 30 years later, this is still one of the more powerful songs you’ll ever hear. Fear of a Black Planet went on to go platinum and they dropped a total of five singles from the project. The third single was released in April of 1990 and this time they took aim at the police. 911 is a Joke was the single and it also is considered one of those classic hip hop records. While 911 is a Joke didn’t garner the spins that Fight the Power it’s still a dope record. Fear of a Black Planet is a good album, but it’s not touching It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. The only features were Big Daddy Kane and Ice Cube. Check out the track listing and stream links below.
