See the amazing finalists for an epic outdoor art installation on Roosevelt Island
For the past ten summers, arts organization Figment NYCin conjunction with the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects NY Chapter (AIANY) and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY)has co-sponsored an annual competition for the City of Dreams Pavilion, a sort of outdoor art piece slash shelter meant to demonstrate the latest in sustainable building. The contest calls for architects and designers to submit ideas for structures constructed out of recycled materials. One previous entry, for example, was made out of reclaimed aluminum cans; another was cobbled together out of curving sheets of corrugated metal salvaged from grain silos. Still another comprised a set of swings inside large boxes made from leftover timber collected at a construction site. Now, the names of the five finalists for the 2020 installation have been released along with renderings for their proposals.
While earlier winners wound up on Governors Island, this years selection will be moving to Lighthouse Park on Roosevelt Island, where it will serve as the centerpiece for two days of cultural festivities curated by Figment NYC. One design, for instanceEcosphere by Murr Architekten (pictured above)features a huge orb of greenery suspended inside a latticed cube of scaffolding.

Meanwhile, another plan, The Pneuma by Ying Qi Chen and Ryan Somerville assembles used exercise balls into a pillow-y haven for rest and relaxation. The event will take place June 67, and promises to transform Roosevelt Island into a collaborative artwork. You can check out the remaining entries below.
